Does GRIN capture SMS consent, and can you add SMS opt-in to your application form?

Updated by Michel from GRIN

Overview

GRIN does not capture SMS consent, and the reason it is not captured separately from email consent is that there is no consent field on the creator record at all. This article covers what your creator application form can collect, why an SMS opt-in is not one of the options, and what to do if recording SMS consent is a compliance requirement on your side.

What the application form collects

Every creator application form always collects Email Address, First Name and Last Name. Beyond those three, the built-in fields you can switch on are Shipping Address, Phone Number and Gender.

Phone Number is the one worth calling out, because it is the field most often mistaken for an opt-in. It is a phone number field, so it stores a number and nothing else. Switching it on does not record consent for anything.

Why there is no SMS opt-in

GRIN does not send SMS to creators. Creator-facing notifications go out over email, so there is no SMS sending for a consent flag to gate in the first place. That is the underlying reason the field does not exist, rather than it being an option that has not been switched on yet.

If your legal or compliance team requires a record of SMS consent, that requirement cannot be met by a built-in field on the GRIN creator record today. This is worth working out with your legal team first, since the requirement is theirs to define.

If it helps to know exactly what GRIN can and cannot hold on the creator record so the two line up, contact GRIN Support and we are glad to walk through it with you.
