Generating a HAR File for Troubleshooting

Updated by Michel from GRIN

A HAR file is a log of the network requests your browser makes while a page is loading or an action is failing. When GRIN Support asks you for a HAR file, they need that log from the moment the error appeared.

Use this when you see "Something went wrong, please try again or contact support" on the Live Site, including on the Live Site dashboard when you select Add Metrics, then on the Deliver Task page choose the Screenshots input method and select Upload Screenshots. The same capture also helps when that error appears in a desktop browser on the Live Site or in app.grin.co.

For the usual Instagram metrics upload flow (when it is working), see Uploading Instagram and Facebook Stats.

Treat the HAR as sensitive. A HAR file can contain cookies, page content, and session data. Do not post it in a public place. Rename the file before you send it. Do not leave a .com URL as the filename. If the file is large, zip it. You can strip cookies and auth headers with Cloudflare's HAR sanitizer at https://har-sanitizer.pages.dev/ before you send the file.

What You'll Need

  • A desktop browser: Chrome, Firefox, or Safari.

  • The page where the error happens, already open.

  • A way to reply to GRIN Support with the HAR file and a screenshot.

How to Do It

Chrome

1. Open the page where the issue happens.

2. Open the browser menu, then More tools > Developer Tools. You can also press Control+Shift+I on Windows or Command+Option+I on a Mac.

3. Select the Network tab.

4. Confirm the record button is red. If it is grey, select it to start recording.

5. Check Preserve log.

6. Select the clear button to remove existing logs.

7. Reproduce the error on the page.

8. Select Export HAR (sometimes labeled Save as HAR with Content).

9. Open the Console tab and take a screenshot of any errors.

Note: If the HAR file is empty (0 bytes), open DevTools settings and turn on HAR exports with sensitive data, then export again.

If the error opens in a new tab, open DevTools settings and turn on auto-open DevTools for popups, then reproduce the error again so the new tab is recorded.

Firefox

1. Open the page where the issue happens.

2. Open the Network Monitor (Control+Shift+E on Windows, or Command+Option+E on a Mac).

3. Reproduce the error on the page.

4. Select Save All As HAR.

5. Open the Console and take a screenshot of any errors.

Safari

1. If you do not see a Develop menu, open Safari settings and enable it there.

2. Open the page where the issue happens.

3. Select Develop > Show Web Inspector.

4. Select the Network tab.

5. Reproduce the error on the page.

6. Select Export.

7. Open the Console tab and take a screenshot of any errors.

Example: Live Site dashboard

1. On your Live Site dashboard, select Add Metrics.

2. On the Deliver Task page, choose the Screenshots input method, then select Upload Screenshots.

3. With the Network tab recording, reproduce "Something went wrong, please try again or contact support".

4. Export the HAR file and take a Console screenshot.

5. Rename the file (do not leave a .com URL as the filename), zip it if it is large, and reply to GRIN Support with the file plus the screenshot.
